Rapid Payments
Rapid Payment is one of the interim payment offers for redress offered by current government agencies (see details for each agency for more information).
-
These payments differ on where you were placed, and for how long. They are not done on the abuse you have suffered.
-
The payments can range from $1000-$30,000 depending on the government provider or agency.
-
These payments work far quicker, and depending on the agency, can be paid out in less than six months, while the full claims process can take several years.
Note: Those who are of very ill health and are terminally ill can ask to have their claim prioritized under either RAPID payment or the full claims process.
For more information about Rapid Payments - please read:
Ministry of Education
You may be able to lodge a sensitive claim with the Ministry of Education if you believe you were abused (physical, sexual, psychological), mistreated or neglected when you attended:
-
a specialist school before 1989
-
any state school that is now closed (including specialist schools and health camp schools).
For more information or to lodge a claim, please do so here:
The Ministry of Education also provides wellbeing support for sensitive claimants.
Note: If your claim is about incidents at a primary school after 1989 or at a secondary school and that school is still open, the school’s board might be the correct respondent to your claim. If your claim is about incidents at a private school, you will need to discuss this with the governing body of the school in the first instance.
For records from a school that is still open - You will need to contact the school. Contact details for schools can be found here
For records from a school that has been closed Email: enquiries.national@education.govt.nz In writing: The Privacy Officer Ministry of Education PO Box 1666 Wellington 6140
If you have any queries about this process or would like to lodge a claim about your time at a state school and you are unsure about where to go, you can contact the Ministry of Education Sensitive Claims team.
They can also support you to talk to a school board about your concerns if you wish.
